How to Write a Resume With No Experience Lack of experience is not uncommon for new college graduates. If you are a recent grad, donât let this discourage you from applying for the job you want. Here are some tips on how to write an effective resume, even if you feel like you dont have enough experience. Start with a summary The summary at the beginning of your resume is your âelevator pitchâ. Tell your potential employer who you are and what you have to offer. Since you donât have much work experience, you may want to highlight your education and skills. Be concise. If you have a long list of skills, donât list them all. Instead you should look at the job posting you are applying for and emphasise those that are mentioned in the job description and are relevant to the employer and role you are applying for. You can also check out job ads for other vacancies in the same industry and come up with a list of common skills required for these jobs. Having the skills an employer is looking for will get you a step closer to an interview. However, it is not recommended that you lie about what you know or have experience in, as it is likely that you will get caught out at a later stage. Tackle the experience section For a new college grad, this section can be a challenge, but not one that canât be overcome. Obviously you canât leave it empty. How about filling this section with all your babysitting experiences? Well, donât do that unless you are looking for a job as a babysitter. Instead of focusing on work experience, which you lack, change the focus to your skills. Look back at the skills you put in the summary section and elaborate on each skill. Be sure to explain how you utilised each skill, for example, how did you apply these skills in your coursework? Did you acquire any such skills in extracurricular activities? Did you have any volunteer work experience? How did you apply these skills? Even though you may not get paid for volunteer work, they are still valid experiences that you should include in your resume and it is likely that you developed valuable skills and experience that will benefit you in your future career. For example, project management or leadership skills could be ones to mention, if you were involved in planning or organising activities among a team during a volunteer project. List your work history If you have interned or volunteered at any company or organization, you can include the dates and positions in this section. Here you can give a brief explanation of the role you took on and what your responsibilities were. However, since you have already listed your experience in the above sections, there is no need to repeat the same information here. Before you spray every social media outpost with it, take a few minutes to go through this checklist to make sure it does you justice. Here are seven hallmarks of an effective personal brand statement: 1. The length of one out-breath You should be able to take a deep breath and then comfortably deliver your statement. If itâs any longer than this, you risk not making that impact you were looking for so chop it down. 2. The WOW-factor Just like any performance, your personal brand statement should be received with a mixture of surprise and delight. If this isnât the case, you are probably saying something very similar to your peers. Make it unique and youâll evoke the WOW on peopleâs faces. 3. An eight-year-old understands it Or a four-year-old if you are really tough on yourself. Your statement should never contain any technical terms or jargon, it should be in plain English and touching on the lowest common denominator. Test it on your children and see how you fare, can they tell you exactly what benefit and value you add? 4. Yours and only yours Can you be sure that your statement is unique? If you find that your statement is similar to others, try harder to really make it stand out by examining exactly what you do uniquely and how to present this. 5. Delivered with confidence The delivery is equally important to the content. You must be able to put on your best story telling voice and really mesmerize your new found acquaintant. Great delivery comes with practice so get in front of your mirror and get rehearsing today. 6. Leaves them wanting more A classic trick in show business is to dazzle the audience and have them begging for more. By only giving out a teaser that is interesting enough, you are likely to be asked to elaborate and thatâs when you go into selling mode. 7. Catchy, memorable and repeatable To cover a lot of ground you are going to need others to spread your statement via word-of-mouth marketing. In order for them to do this, you have to stay punchy and memorable enough to get repeated over and over. Final thought Remember that your personal brand statement will always be a work in progress and you should update it as your career or business changes over time. These monsters can look good, seductive even, but if you let them, theyll suck the life force out of you and leave you dead. Or worse: One of them. I call them vampire ideas and all they deserve is a stake through the heart. Vampire ideas can be found in stock management philosophy, tired old leadership theories or business advice from an earlier era. Wherever they come from, theyre bad for you and theyre bad for business. Who on earth still believes that this is a good way to do business and to get the best performance from employees. This idea keeps employees constantly afraid, but if thats what you want, go for it. The exact opposite view is described here and trust me, it works much better. If you cant measure it, you cant manage it Considering how many things in a business are unmeasured, not to say unmeasurable, this is one more bad idea in need of a final resting place. Ive written about it previously here. This idea of management-by-spreadsheet stifles new ideas and reduces a leaders focus to things that can be expressed in numbers. Long work hours are good for business No. Theyre not. In fact, laziness will take you much further. Nice guys finish last Thats not true either. It can work on your computer, tablet and or smartphone so youâre always able to update and change anything. Walking it alone The path to success is going to be ridden with many heartbreaks. When somebody is forging ahead with new ways of thinking in business, or in walks of life where there is lots of organised competition, people will see it as odd. There will be floating heads saying youâre doomed to failure and that something youâre doing hasnât been done before for a reason. Never fear to walk alone, when all others donât wish to help or turn their backs on you, have the resolve to believe in what youâre doing. Stick to your goals no matter how long it takes, remain organised in your thoughts and remember why you started your journey. Everyone is capable of success, but few have the fortitude to see it happen in their lifetime. Remaining organized, just sticking to your routine, having clarity of thought and remaining determined, make success a mere formality.
